Spent some time with the guy building this today. Full on “bug out” build. Solar panels, deep cycle batteries, a fridge/freezer. Off-road tires and soon a 4wd conversion.

Covid meant he got t his former work van for cheap.

Now I kinda want one? Why don’t I have an unlimited budget

That looks to be in fairly good condition. Great base for a 4wd conversion camper. I would have probably started with a high roof one though.

Vans are good. They don't get enough credit.

It is in good shape for what he paid. People's companies going through financial trouble equals deals

We must also consider the 7.3 Excursion that already has 4x4.

Yeah, the extra headroom would be great there. I suppose the best van is the one that you have though.

If I were the type of person who would use it regularly and had a bunch of money I’d probably pick up one of those Sportsmobile conversions.

I always said if I ever came into a surplus of money, I wouldn’t buy exotics and collectibles. I would buy a fleet of vans with a different application for every one.

Overland van

camper van

16 passenger van

cavernous cargo van

towing van

rally van

drag van

drift van

monster truck/van

you get it...

“had a bunch of money”

That sure would make it easier. You could probably find a pre camper ified van and then have a shop swap in 4x4 as the cheapest route. This seems like a pretty thorough build though.

Literally the most versatile vehicle type out there

That looks good, I hav been giving serious thought to a camper build myself. The full size vans are getting cheaper now, but would love either a tall roof or sprinter build but that’s way out of my budget.

This would be my personal choice for the tow van.

I had something very similar in my mind as well!

My brother had a 2003 E350 6 liter with a Quigley 4wd conversion (lifted on 33's), pop up roof, full electrical system, etc.

We borrowed it for a weekend of camping. It was wonderful to have, but there was something going on with the suspension of the thing (my brother suspected it was tire pressure). It was absolutely terrifying to drive. Scary amount of body roll with the slightest turn of the wheel. Even for such a high profile vehicle, I’d never driven something that bad.

It was fantastic once we got to our destination, so I’d be willing to give em another shot..hopefully that was just a simple issue to resolve.

FWIW my brother sold his after a long road trip. He’s targeting a 4x4 Sprinter conversion in the future.  But it was enough, we both got the bug!
